Richard Sapper is a German designer, born in Munich in 1932. He studied philosophy, anatomy, graphics, engineering and political economics. Between 1956 and 1958 he worked in the projecting department of Mercedes Benz and soon after he moved to Milan, where he began working together with Giò Ponti and later for laRinascente. In those years he designed together with Marco Zanuso radios and TVs for Brionvega, the telephone Grillo for Siemens, furniture, lamps and so on… Between 1970 and 1976 he was counselor for cars and accessories for Fiat and Pirelli; after that, he was counselor for IBM all over the world. Since 1986 he has been teaching at the Hochschule für angewandte Kunst of Vienna. Sapper is considered one of the most important designers of his generation. His products show a combination of technical innovation and pureness of the shapes. He has won several international design prizes, such as the Lucky Strike award of the Raymond Loewy Foundation and, for ten times, the Compasso d’Oro. His products are present in the permanent collections of many museums all over the world, included the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) of New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum of London.
